The Lord is my Banner

When an army goes into battle, they usually have a flag symbolizing what country they are fighting for, which country is with them in this fight, which country has brought them here.

In Exodus 17, Joshua, Aaron, and Hur found themselves in a fight with the Israelites against the Amalekites. Moses said to Joshua that while they were in battle, he would stand onto of the hill “with the staff of God in my hands”.

As long as Moses had his arms up, the Israelites were winning. Obviously holding a staff in the air through a long battle is difficult. My toddler complains of his arms hurting when I ask him to hold an empty grocery bag. Moses wasn’t able to hold his arms up the entire time, the Amalekites winning every time Moses had to rest.

When Aaron and Hur noticed Moses was struggling, they left battle to hold Moses arms up for him. This resulted in the defeat of the Amalekites. Afterward, Moses built an alter to the Lord and Jehovah Nissi, which means “the Lord is my Banner”.

The Lord is your Banner. He’s the flag that’s with you in battle. If you feel lost, look to your banner (God) to remind you of who is with you. Use this invisible banner as a reminder that God is with you through every struggle and trial that you face. And then, when (not if), you are victorious in your battles, you get to proudly wave your banner declaring that your Lord was with you and helped you through every step.

When you approach a battle, are you waving your Jehovah Nissi or are you letting a banner of fear, anxiety, and anger walk with you?

Our God, a firm foundation
Our rock, the only solid ground
As nations rise and fall
Kingdoms once strong now shaken
But we trust forever in Your name
The name of Jesus
We trust the name of Jesus

You are the only King forever
Almighty God we lift You higher
You are the only King forever
Forevermore, You are victorious

You are the only King forever
Almighty God we lift You higher
You are the only King forever
Forevermore, You are victorious

Unmatched in all Your wisdom
In love and justice You will reign
And every knee will bow
We bring our expectations
Our hope is anchored in Your name
The name of Jesus
Oh-oh, we trust the name of Jesus

You are the only King forever
Almighty God we lift You higher
You are the only King forever
Forevermore, You are victorious

You are the only King forever
Almighty God we lift You higher
You are the only King forever
Forevermore, You are victorious

We lift our banner high
We lift the name of Jesus
From age to age You reign
Your kingdom has no end

We lift our banner high
We lift the name of Jesus
From age to age You reign
Your kingdom has no end

You are the only King forever
Almighty God we lift You higher
You are the only King forever
Forevermore, You are victorious

You are the only King forever
Almighty God we lift You higher
You are the only King forever
Forevermore, You are victorious
